Module 1 was about the history of the internet, the Internets growth over the the years and activities. The short video I watched (posted on the second page of the lecture) taught me that the internet was started in 1960 and e-mail was started in 1972. I believe it was used mostly used by the military. The world wide web was started by Tim Berners-Lee because he "envisioned the use of hyperlinks to make connections between related ideas in separate documents" ("Discovering the Internet" pg16").
The internet has come a long way since 1960. There are many different ways to communicate with people over the internet. There is e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, facebook, myspace, twitter, etc. You can download and upload pictures and videos. People conduct their business over the internet and people even go to school online.
- Host: a computer connected to the internet.
- Web Server: computer on which Web pages are stored.
- Business to Business: a company's purchasing manager goes online to buy materials using a venders website.
- Circuit Switching: allows a caller to dial a number to establish and maintain a private circuit across the wires from the time the receiver is lifted until one of the parties hangs up
